About Nakama

About Us

Becky and Bob opened Nakama Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar on the corner of 17th and East Carson Street in Pittsburghs trendy South Side. The historical landmark four-story structure has been totally renovated, seamlessly integrating the most modern restaurant equipment, including the first smokeless hibachi tables in Pittsburgh, with the grace and charm of an 1893 structure. Since Becky and Bob were guests before they were owners, they planned the restaurant based on the guests wants. Guests on a tight time schedule have the option of grabbing a bite; at the bar - including enticing appetizers.

Savor the incredible creations of our sushi chef providing limitless options, which are too beautiful to eat - well, almost too beautiful.

Becky?s marketing background influences her strategies to promote the restaurant. We appreciate guests who frequent Nakama. Nakama is a hip, trendy scene where patrons can enjoy the knife wielding skill and showmanship of our specially trained chefs, our unique appetizers and the best sushi in Pittsburgh; our guests will be rewarded with frequent dining points upon joining our VIP program (its FREE).

Great Food, Great Atmosphere

Posted by bricks447 on 6/9/2009

Bottom Line, do not read the One Star Ratings. This is by a mile the best food that I ever had. The atmosphere is a little loud, but that it is why this is the place to be on a night out. A couple suggestions, never show up on a Friday or Saturday Night without a reservation, you will never get in or wait for 2 hours. Make sure that your whole party is there because they will not seat you. Also, wear your Friday or Saturday best because almost everyone is dressed to impess. The only downside of this place is that it is a little pricey, but the extra couple bucks is well worth it.

Delicious but Crowded

We love this place when we're kid free. It's a little on the noisy side, but the food is excellent. Sushi is fresh and the steaks are melt in your mouth.

BAD service

Posted by chelybelle on 5/7/2008

The food was actually good but I have never had such bad service anywhere and that included the hostess, the bartender, and the server. Completely inexperienced staff all the way around (I could understand on a weekend..maybe, but this was on a Tuesday and it was not busy). I will never go back.

Not an ideal place

Posted by pittsburgheater on 4/9/2008

Decided to bring my girlfriend here for our 3 year anniversary. The evening started out by waiting for about 1 1/2 hours for a table. After spending money on drinks we were ready for our table. The waitress took a while to get to our table and when she did, she was impatience. Again we wait and wait, our drinks come, soup and salad. Finally the chef comes to our table to prepare our meal. I ordered filet mignon and shrimp, my girlfriend ordered calamari and scallops. After waiting for so long, I still found some excitement for the food ( maybe cause I was starving). He was entertaining but didn't really talk much. I asked for my filet to be medium rare, and what do I get......pretty much cooked well. The fried rice had too much soy sauce and was just too salty. The vegetables were left on the grill a little to long and I received some burnt veggies. (not appealing) My girlfriend's calamari was semi cooked. I am guessing thats how they cook it but if she wanted it that way, we would of have ordered some sushi. As I look around the restaurant, I notice how dirty the floor was. There was shrimp tails, napkins, straws, etc all over the floor. Nothing was every picked up. Sauces that dropped on the floor by a buser was left. I was disgusted. I don't even want to know how the kitchen looks. The overall atmostphere here is loud ( something college kids would love) I made a mistake by taking my girlfriend here thinking that I would get great service and food along with entertainment. I will not return and will advise my friends as well. This place is not worth the wait! disappointed.
